Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Anchorage

Total Budget: $5,000

Area of Focus: Community economic development

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: Supporting costs for annual July 4th Field of Honor® Flag Display.

Anchorage International Rotary Club (AIRC) hosted its inaugural Field of Honor flag display in July 2023. This event showcased 500 American flags flown in formation on the Anchorage Delaney Park Strip over the 4th of July holiday. It was a stunning visual installation - both reverent and beautiful - to honor the heroes who have served our country.

This event was sponsored by several local businesses bringing attention and promoting those businesses. It was also a fundraiser for the AIRC charities fund. The AIRC is preparing to host this event annually, to raise funds for service projects in our community and to bring awareness of Rotary and highlight the role all clubs play in our communities.

Individuals and organizations will have the opportunity to sponsor flags in honor of loved ones, whether they be veterans, active-duty military, first responders, essential workers, warrior dogs, hometown heroes, or heroes in our lives. Flags dedicated will be tagged with the hero's name and affiliation. At the end of the event, sponsors may claim their flag(s) or donate it back to the AIRC for use the following year.

This event will assist our club in supporting a variety of organizations, including the following.

• Alaska Armed Services YMCA - helping our local military families.

• Alaska Child & Family Services

• Alaska Health Fair

• Alaska Youth Court

• Clare House - feeding families and maintenance of their garden/play area.

• Polio Eradication

• Project Amigo

• Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) Camp

• Shelter Box

• ....and so much more!

This district grant application is requesting financial support for the July 4, 2024 event. The funds would cover municipal permitting costs, creation of sponsorship signs and flag dedication tags and the printing of event and Rotary marketing materials.

In addition, we are considering building a small, raised stage where the public can safely view the Field of Honor from an elevated position. This allows for an amazing view of the flag installation and offers a stunning photo opportunity.

If this grant is approved, AIRC will begin preparing for this year's event as soon as possible.
