Alaska has the highest drowning death rate in the nation. At 4.75 per 100,000 is it almost four times the national average. Alaska Native children's drowning death rate is an astonishing 15.7 per 100,000. Overall drowning death rates for children living in Alaska is 6.9 per 100,000 for males and 3.5 per 100,000 for females.
The State of Alaska Epidemiology Bulletin No.8 dated May 31, 2023 recommends that all children be taught how to swim and how to flip on their backs in the water.
This project will provide funding for scholarships that will provide low to moderate income children with access to swim lessons taught by members of the University of Alaska Fairbanks swim team.
