Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Anchoragr AK

Total Budget: $5,000

Areas of Focus: Basic education and literacy, Community economic development

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: Project provides life skills books to each Alaska Military Youth Academy (AMYA) graduating student

The AMYA works with highly at risk youth (15-18 years old) from all over Alaska. These youth are deficient in most skills required for active contribution in today's world, including academic achievement and social interactions. Graduates have a better understanding of their individual worth, value to their community, and way ahead for a productive life. This program/grant will provide each graduate with reading materials reinforcing the concepts they learned at the Academy and supporting their return to their communities.

We successfully graduated 133 Cadets on December 11th. My Language Arts teacher said that the two titles, “Left to Tell,” and “Unbroken,” are the most popular with the Cadets and we sent copies home with them. He asked me to pass on his gratitude for your support. Literacy appears to be a continuing challenge for our cadets as we had a few who were barely at an elementary level upon arrival on campus.

I ordered these through Barnes and Nobles, and paid for them today. I believe the Grant amount was 2500.00 and I’ll gladly contribute I really appreciate the support that you’ve provided.
