Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Peoria, AZ

Total Budget: $2,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Scholarship

Summary: One college scholarship funded for a graduating Peoria Unified School District Student

The Peoria North Rotary Club launched the George and Willi Wheeler Scholarship (named after a founding member of our club and Past District Governor) in 2022 and awarded its first two scholarships in 2023. Two graduating students from the Peoria Unified School District each received $2,000 to use toward higher education (college, vocational, trade school). The recipients were chosen based on several criteria: Financial need, academic achievement and history of community service. Club fundraisers funded the scholarships, and Peoria North has announced plans to award three scholarships in 2024-25. We are seeking a $1,000 grant (to match $1,000 put forward by the club) to fund a fourth scholarship in 2024-25. Our recipients will be chosen on the same criteria, with the winners announced at an annual community education event hosted by the school district.

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

The club selected its three 2025 Wheeler Scholarships recipients in January (among over a dozen applications). Each scholarship was for $2,000. The club fully funded two scholarships, but presented a third scholarship this year thanks to a DDF grant. Allison Black received the third scholarship -- with $1,000 paid by the club, and the other $1,000 from a DDF grant. The three recipients were presented with their funds and certificates at the club's annual Dinner Classic held in February. The checks are given to the students, with an agreement from them and their parents that the funds are only to be used toward tuition/book costs once enrolled this fall at a college or university. Attached are copies of the check, certificate and a photo of the recipient.

Congratulations! This project has been approved for full funding. We need to do some administrative things, so we don’t know exactly when the money will hit your account, but our best guess is a month or so. We’ll send you an update when we have one. Please also remember that you may not spend money prior to TRF approval and reimburse yourself from grant funds. If there have been changes in your bank account (information for electronic transfer), please get that to Lucinda General (District Treasurer) as soon as possible. treasurer@rotary5495.org. Your report is due April 30, 2024, and receipts are required to complete the report (not invoices, cancelled checks, UPS shipping labels, or any other documents). Thank you for making the world a better place.

The district grant process is progressing but is delayed somewhat due to the second round of grant submissions. We will notify you as soon as the grant funds are available. Reminder: No money should be spent until the funds are sent to the clubs. No receipts for spending prior to that can be accepted.

After some delay from RI our block grant was approved on Friday August 30, 2024. The funds should be transferred sometime next week. We will be changing the status on your grant to “Approved” as of that date. As has been stated several times RI will not recognize receipts dated prior to August 30, 2024. Also, PO’s and cancelled checks are not acceptable forms of documentation. Please be sure all banking information is up to date.
