Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Pocatello, Idaho

Total Budget: $2,500

Area of Focus: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention

Activity Type: Peace: General

Summary: Procure, plant, and maintain peace poles in public places in the Pocatello-Chubbuck, Idaho area.

Project Description: The Rotary World Peace Pole Project encourages Rotary Clubs to plant peace poles with the Rotary emblem and message "May Peace Prevail on Earth." There are peace poles at Idaho State University and a local church. Pocatello Centennial Rotary Club has permits to plant peace poles at a public park in the Pocatello historic district (Lookout Point) and at a highly used public park on the north end of Pocatello (OK Ward). We are in discussion with the Mayor of Chubbuck regarding a potential placement in a park in Chubbuck. Our target date is Indigenous People's Day October 13, 2025. The inscription would be in English, Spanish, Japanese, Italian, Greek, Chinese, and Shoshone-Bannock (indigenous tribes) languages that have historic connection with this area. Iwamizawa, Hokkaido, Japan is a Pocatello sister city. Many Spanish speaking immigrants live in our area. The Shoshone-Bannock Tribes Fort Hall reservation adjoins city property. The project would also procure an explanatory plaque for each pole, and a Rotary-branded all-weather portable banner with Pocatello Centennial Rotary Club name and the "may peace prevail on earth" message to be an outward and visible sign of Rotarians at work in our local hands-on public projects and events. Total budget: $2,500. Club contribution: $1,173 District contribution (DDF) Tier 2B: $1,327. Club members plan, execute and maintain this project and have pledged additional funds if actual project cost exceeds $2,500.
