This proposed project is to support the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District ("KPBSD") Students In Transition program that support children, K-12 students, that lack a permanent, stable, and adequate place to sleep at night ("SIT") for academic year 2025/26.
During the 2024/25 academic year, 80 students were identified by KPBSD as homeless, under the guideline of the KPBSD McKinney-Vento program (https://kpbsd.org/sites/sit/). Kenai Rotary partners with the Sterling Senior Center, Sterling, Alaska, to knit or provide blankets for identified SIT students and contribute to personal hygiene and winter warmth clothing items including gloves and mitts. In 2024/25, Kenai rotary provided a $4,000 financial contribution to the SIT program, and we successfully delivered the blankets and funding to KPBSD to support the 2024/25 SIT needs of 80 students.
The annual number and frequency of identified SIT students is not consistent, and names of students, their family, or their current residence are not part of this program. For 2025/26, I propose to fund and continue collaborations with the Sterling Senior Center for their blanket support to support the SIT for 2025/26. We seek district support in this program in providing for local child health support and safety. My club is in agreement and support to fund this proposed project.
