Summary: Legal Advocacy and Migration Field Research and Study in Amman Jordan

Sophia Gomelsky, senior pursuing dual degrees in Political Science and International Studies at the University of Wyoming (UW), is planning to study and conduct research in Jordan May 15 through August 2025. This scholarship will support study and research that advances her long-term goal of specializing in asylum and refugee law. It will generate legal analysis and policy recommendations, contributing to academic discourse and practical advocacy efforts aimed at improving legal protections for displaced populations in Jordan. Initial study from May 15 to July 20 will provide 6 upper-division Honors UW credits in an academic program hosted by the Center for International Experiential Learning. The program will provide a structured academic foundation in regional geopolitics, security, migration, and development in Jordan. It also involves engagement with policymakers, NGO representatives, academics and individuals affected by displacement. The final phase of will be an independent field research project extending from late July to late August 2025 in collaboration with the Jordanian Legal Aid Organization (JLAO) and other legal institutions. Dr. Eric Nigh, Director of the Middle Eastern and Arabic Studies Department at UW is her advisor for the entire project. Additionally, Sophia has established connections with legal professionals and NGO's in Jordan, as well as the broader region, to facilitate data collection and field access.
