Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Chula Vista

Total Budget: $6,000

Area of Focus: Maternal and child health

Activity Type: Health: General

Summary: Bike Build and Community Health Fair for Chula Vista community with a focus on the underserved in south San Diego County. Enables the purchase of 75-100 bikes with the match, depending on the bike size and cost.

The 3rd Annual Bike Build & Community Health Fair will be held in May 2026 which is National Bike Safety Month and Drowning Prevention Month. Chula Vista Rotary Club will partner with Interact, Rotaract, Area 6 Rotary Clubs, District Polio Plus Committee, Bonita Kiwanis, Chula Vista PD, Chula Vista Fire, Chula Vista Parks & Rec, Chula Vista Library, South Bay Sustainable Communities, Circulate SD, Chula Vista Animal Care Facility, Sharp and Scripps Hospitals, Altrusa, CV Elementary School District, Sprouts, Costco and other community partners for a Bike Build & Community Health Fair.

200+ bikes will be built in the morning the day of the event and will be given to underprivileged children identified through an application process in Chula Vista Elementary School District. They will be given the bikes, along with helmets donated by Scripps Hospital during the safety event. Circulate San Diego will teach bike safety through a bike rodeo. For many of these children, this is the first bike they have ever owned due to financial reasons.

The event will be held at Loma Verde Swim Facility in Chula Vista where free swim lessons will be given. On site we will have a fire engine, the Blood Mobile, County of San Diego Live Well Van, an ambulance for touring, police car seat checks, blood pressure testing, healthy snack give away from Sprouts, CPR training, rabies shots for pets and free pet microchipping among other experiences.

Underserved youth and their families may not have access to safety training or the materials that will be available at each booth at the fair. We want to continue to provide educational options, along with connections to resources that these families need. Providing pet microchipping and rabies shots for their pets was a huge hit and drew many people to the fair.

In addition to District funding, we plan on raising additional funds to continue growing this needed community event.
