Each year, the San Marcos Rotary Club sponsors students to attend the annual District 5340 Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, or "RYLA. which recognizes and rewards deserving 11th grade students for their leadership and service. Each April, about 200 young leaders attend an all-expenses-paid weekend in Idyllwild, where they are inspired by a diverse group of exceptional speakers, participate in leadership building activities, make life-long friends, and discuss ethical and social issues affecting leadership today. These students return to their schools and communities motivated to continue their leadership journeys with fresh insights into themselves and the world around them.
This coming year the San Marcos Rotary Club plans to sponsor 9 students from San Marcos and Mission Hills High schools. Club members work with the high school representatives to identify exceptional students who will benefit from the RYLA experience. Club members then review applicants to select participants.
One of the highlights for San Marcos Rotarians is attend the RYLA banquet where they meet and dine with parents, students, counselors, and school officials to celebrate the participants.
At the banquet Rotarians get to hear presentations from each student describing their experience and the positive impact it has made on each of their lives. It is always a heart-warming event to hear from these students, many of whom describe the conference as a life-changing event.
The sponsorship will cost $500 per student for a total of $4,500. Lunches for students, parents, and school representatives will cost 45 at $25 each for $1,125 plus tip for a total of $1,327. Participation Plaques for students will cost $260. Total for the project $6,087.
