This community service project directly supports downtown LaJolla economic development and environment sustainment - erosion control.
- The Coastal Walk Trail is .6 miles in length. It is located on the cliffs directly above the Pacific Ocean and 1 block from downtown LaJolla. The natural trail is a popular attraction for out of owners and local residents. Many visitors walk the trail then enjoy the many shops in downtown LaJolla.
- The trail is exposed to the harsh marine environment and is especially sensitive to the La Jolla winter rains.
-This low technical risk project involves replacing a deteriorating 12' retaining wall to sustain the outcropping and installing a french drain to channel rain run off to safely mitigate future erosion.
The project is erosion mitigation / control, and must be completed before the California winter storms, rain, and wind arrive.
Delaying the project into next year will probably damage the Coast Walk Trail past the Safe to Travel point, risks closing the trail, and will dramatically increase cost and scope of the repair project.
-La Jolla Sunrise Rotary has embraced supporting this historic trail and will continue to support thru fundraisers, administrative support and actively coordinate community support.
-This shovel ready environmental sustainment project has: approved project plans, approved San Diego City permits, and contractor agreement. It is awaiting funding.
-Our Club is donating $6,000.00. The $1,500.00 DDF will fully fund the $7,500.00 project.
This project is coordinated by LaJolla Sunrise Past President Steve Cross and Rotarian Brenda Fake (Friends of Coast Walk Trail).
