The project seeks to provide a set of an educational resource material known as SmartBox and/or SmartServer that works as a computer lab and digital library without the need for internet. The box contains twenty laptops/Chromebook computers and accessories. This will be the third year implementing this project at three different schools. It identifies a school in the community, equips and trains the faculty and staff with the necessary skills, knowledge and resources on how to utilize the technology. In turn, these teachers will help train students thereby creating a domino effect. The project includes working with a participating organization (Destiny Hands International Inc.), a 501(c)3 located in San Diego, California which has first-hand knowledge of the educational needs and is able to perform an on-site verification of the project completion. The project will be from July 2025 through March 2026.
Need/Problem:
Students in Foya District and its surroundings graduate from high school without any opportunity or access to computer lab and equipped libraries to learn basic computer skills and do research/home work. In fact, most often, teachers also lack the necessary skills, training, and resources to help further their students' education. In March 2024, for the first time in that remote part of Liberia, one of six high schools in the district successfully benefited from the program. Then in March 2025, another public high school also benefited. This is a game changer for education in the district and beyond. This project will directly affect at least 450 students including faculty and staff. It will also benefit hundreds if not thousands more of Liberian schoolchildren including many orphans and extremely poor children with little or no opportunity for education for many years to come. This is a continuation of a gift given by Rotary and its partners for the purpose of enhancing education and developing world peace through creating understanding between nations.
Who will carry out the project / Budget summary:
The sponsoring club Rotarians will be involved in project planning and promotion, logistics and handover ceremonies. The sponsoring club will specifically provide a sum of US$2,000 in addition to its DDF for this project. The amount will underwrite portion of a one-time cost of a SmartBox/SmartServer. The partnering organization(s) will underwrite the balance total cost of the remaining line items for this project including but not limited to shipment, training, transportation, and miscellaneous expenses. The collaborating organization(s), with assistance from its affiliating local Liberian organization, will coordinate and carry out the project and will be responsible for any future maintenance needs.
