The Rotary Club of Yonkers-East Yonkers proposes to carry out a two-part literacy project to benefit 1st and 3rd grade students in all public and private schools in Yonkers.
The Yonkers public school district reports that 24,825 students will study at its 39 schools during the 2025-26 school year. Like the other large school districts in New York State, the Yonkers School District is in an urban environment and competes with many other critical needs for tax dollars.
Similarly, the 10 private elementary schools in Yonkers struggle to provide a quality education at an affordable tuition.
This project will help bridge the resource gap that both the public and private schools in Yonkers are experiencing and will provide them with some basic literacy tools.
For the first part of the project, our Club will purchase and deliver 5,000 #2 pencils to 100 1st grade classrooms in Yonkers (90 public school classrooms and 10 private school classrooms). This will enable each classroom to receive 50 pencils.
In addition, each classroom will receive a pencil case to hold the pencils.
To help promote Rotary, the pencils and pencil cases will be imprinted with the words: "Compliments of the Rotary Club of Yonkers - East Yonkers".
For the second part of the project, our Club will purchase and deliver 1,500 paperback Webster dictionaries to each of the 3rd grade classrooms in public and private school in Yonkers.
Again, as a way to promote Rotary, a label with the words: "Compliments of the Rotary Club of Yonkers - East Yonkers" will be affixed to each dictionary.
A copy of the letter that will be delivered to each school pricipal is included in the "Documents" section of this application.
As an indication of the impact that this project will have, a copy of a "thank you" letter from a student who benefited from this project last year is included in the "Documents" section of this application.
