Rivertowns Rotary is organizing the preparation and distribution of approximately 250 breakfast boxes to Mercy University students who are experiencing food insecurity while pursuing their education. Mercy University, recognized as the largest private minority-serving institution in New York State, serves a student population in which nearly 80% of this year's freshmen qualify for federal PELL aid. The university's on-site food pantry, Mav Market, receives over 1,000 visits annually from students in need.
Club members began a monthly breakfast collection in September 2024, brining donations to the first meeting of each month and delivering to the Mav Market's main campus the following day. While these monthly donations have a positive impact, they reach only a small fraction of students utilizing the Mav Market. The planned breakfast box project is intended to extend support to all participants at the three Mercy University campuses, providing much-needed nutritional assistance.
Grant funds, together with matching club donations, will be used to purchase both perishable and non-perishable breakfast foods, such as cereal, protein bars, fresh fruit, and beverages. A portion of the funds will also be allocated to acquiring the packaging materials required for the boxes. The estimated budget is $15 per box for food items and $1 for packing materials.
Club members will be actively involved in shopping for supplies, assembling the boxes, and distributing them across each campus. The project's preparation and distribution are planned for February and March 2026.
