Background:
The Right to Education (RTE) Act (2009) in India mandates that every child between the ages of 6 and 14 years has the right to free and compulsory education. This applies to children in both government and private schools. The act has played an important role in bringing children to school, especially in rural India. Though the enrollment of children in schools has significantly gone high, it has not addressed the issue of high drop-out rates, especially in children from higher grades. When students struggle academically due to inadequate teaching methods, resources, or teacher preparation, they may lose interest in attending school. This lack of engagement can lead to absenteeism and eventually dropping out. It is, hence, imperative to build teachers' capabilities to cater to each student in the classroom, support them in their learning journey, maintain students' interest in learning and focus on improving their learning levels.
Objectives of the project:
a. The current project addresses the community needs of VIDYA BHARATHI ENGLISH MEDIUM SCHOOL, GOWTHAMAPURA by providing structured training to teachers to upgrade their teaching skills particularly in core subjects and updating them in continuous comprehensive evaluation, technology-based teaching and learning.
b. The project also aims to modernize the school with needed infrastructure facilities to support the teacher training and improving learning levels of students.
Beneficiaries:
The teachers, students and the parents from VIDYA BHARATHI ENGLISH MEDIUM SCHOOL, GOWTHAMAPURA are beneficiaries of the project.
The Role of the School in the Community
This school provides free education to children from economically week communities in rural areas. The school caters to a community of nearly 50,000 population consisting mostly of the agrarian class and low-income families. As of now the direct beneficiaries are 220 students studying in the school. All the 220 children get free education. The school caters to students from Class 1 to 8. Students pursue higher education in other schools from nearby villages and quite a few migrate to the nearby cities. Even though overall school report card looks impressive, the learning level of the students need improvement, which can be facilitated by modern teaching technologies. When the students from this school pursue studies at higher grades, this need has been felt. Teachers also feel improvement in their teaching methodologies in core subjects. Challenges are in preparing the students to higher levels of learning with modern technologies. Teaching methodologies in the school are outdated and need upgradation.
The Need for Training Teachers:
The Global Grant project is designed to train teachers with modern pedagogy and technology. At present teaching/learning is examination /result oriented and that is why performance of the students in the Annual Examinations seems satisfactory. The Challenge is to make the learning /teaching content/concept oriented, and the Global Grant is designed to meet this challenge and make the students' knowledge level in Core subjects perfect and not just enough to pass the examinations as is happening at present.
A. The training component includes:
1. Need Based professional development programs for all schoolteachers to be provided by NES Academy for Innovative Teaching as per the schedule given in the attached Global Grant training plan.
2. Adoption of smart classes in day-to-day teaching/ preparation of PowerPoint presentations, and student interaction and Intensive training in usage of computers to be provided by Prof. Chetan K.R. and Mrs. Jyothi from National Education Society.
3. Special training to teachers and students in hand washing and hygienic habits and incorporating the training in the lesson plans in personal Hygiene as per the training plan attached to the application.
All the training activities are offered free of cost as their contribution to the project.
B. Upgrading infrastructure facilities to support the professional development program and the structured training includes 1. Hygiene component of providing separate toilets for boys and girls and safe drinking water facility. 2. Civil Works: to modernize the school building with RCC roof and painting 3. Furniture like benches and desks, tables, chairs . 4. Smart CLASS ROOMS / with Interactive panel with OPS 75" 5. N Computing system with 15 monitors, Single processor server, 3KVA UPS with networking.
The school is providing quality education to the students. At the same time, it cannot afford the much-required training of teachers with upgraded methodologies. and supportive infrastructure facilities.
Need for improving Infrastructure Facilities :
The objectives of the Grant cannot be met satisfactorily unless and until the infrastructure needs are provided. The school building looks shabby with hazardous asbestos roofing. The furniture is totally inadequate and outdated. Number of students sit on floor in the Classes. It is absolutely necessary to upgrade the infrastructure facilities before any meaningful upgradation of the teaching in the school can be undertaken. Good Ambience makes all the difference. Training, Training and training are the fundamental objectives of the Grant. Training is given top priority in the budget. At the same time all the training is being offered by different agencies and persons as a part of the Grant at no cost to Rotary. All the training will be meaningless until the infrastructure is provided. The focus area is training only.
The entire focus of the project is to organize and provide robust need-based training program for teachers and students and improve the school with appropriate infrastructure facilities.
