Proposal Form

Our project consists of building water systems in 2 villages in Comalapa, Nicaragua. The first system will be a well drilled, a pumphouse constructed, storage tanks installed, faucets and water gauges for 310 people in Avispero, Comalapa. The second system will be a gravity fed pump system from a spring, storage tanks, faucets and water gauges for 172 people in Cebollin, Comalapa. The project will also consist of building 59 pit latrines in these villages that will serve 295 people. All members of the communities will also be trained in safe hygiene procedures. CAPS teams will be chosen and trained to oversee the water systems, chlorinate the water, and collect small monthly water payments from the users. These water payments will insure that the project is sustainable and will be saved for maintenance of the systems. These projects are proposed because they meet the needs of the community members as identified through their Needs Assessment. Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. UNICEF reports that 37% of rural people have no safe drinking water and often survive on $35 - $70 USD per month. Water borne diseases are common, with medical facilities often far away. In addition, the women and children of these villages often spend hours per day walking to get drinking water that is not sanitized and is most likely contaminated. People often defecate in the woods due to lack of latrine facilities. The two communities filled out a Community Needs Assessment containing information about their water and hygiene needs. The timeline will be from September 2024-April 2025, but will be contingent upon funding. Community members will donate the manual labor for the project and will be trained in the maintenance and care of the system.

DDF contributions in grey are pending approval of the corresponding district committee.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
