Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Colombia

Location: Antioquia

Total Budget: $47,665

Area of Focus: None

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT:

1.General objective (10 lines maximum)

Provide biomedical equipment to the E.S.E. San Carlos Hospital in the Municipality of Cañasgordas, Antioquia. In this way, approximately 17,000 inhabitants of this community will benefit from the care of the maternal and child population in outpatient services, medical emergencies and basic care transfer services to higher levels of complexity, with emphasis on the training program for graduated and in-training medical personnel and nursing staff in charge of handling and maintaining this equipment, which guarantees its sustainability over time.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT: (15 lines maximum)

The E.S.E. Hospital San Carlos de Cañasgordas, is a first level care institution that offers its health services to a population of approximately 17,000 inhabitants, which includes the urban area with approximately 5,000 inhabitants and the rural area corresponding to 12,000 spread over 3 districts and 68 villages. With this supply of biomedical equipment, it is intended to improve health care for the maternal and child population, contributing to reducing the percentage of patients with extreme maternal morbidity and perinatal mortality, preventable with adequate prenatal screening, avoiding long and costly trips to other levels of care outside the municipality.

WHAT NEEDS DID YOU IDENTIFY?

- The E.S.E. Hospital San Carlos currently does not have biomedical equipment specialized in diagnostic imaging in the pregnant population, which is reflected in the increase in cases of perinatal mortality secondary to congenital malformations not detected early. For the period of validity 2024-1, 4 cases have been reported, which include congenital heart disease and abdominal wall defects.

- The E.S.E. Hospital San Carlos, in addition to its main headquarters in the urban area, has 3 health posts in the main population centers of the community, in which prenatal care services are also provided and require basic and portable biomedical equipment to guarantee the care of the mother and child binomial in these hard-to-reach areas.

- The E.S.E. San Carlos Hospital, as the primary care level, has general medicine services 24 hours a day and gynecology services periodically, a situation that limits the management of pathologies that require assessment at highly complex levels, requiring the transfer of pediatric patients in critical condition outside the municipality; taking into account the lack of biomedical supplies for the safe transportation of newborns.

HOW WILL THE PROJECT MEET THESE NEEDS?

The project seeks to meet the aforementioned needs by providing the low-income pregnant population with the opportunity to access imaging studies that allow for the early detection of congenital pathologies or alterations associated with pregnancy that may put the life of the mother and child at risk, at their reference health center, without the need for expensive travel outside the municipality, thus increasing the percentage of adherence to prenatal screening and decreasing perinatal and neonatal mortality in this community.

Likewise, with the supply of portable ultrasounds to rural care centers, the detection of alterations in fetal well-being during prenatal care will be guaranteed, with the objective of making a safe transfer to the main headquarters for an adequate medical assessment and, if required, initiating a transfer with the required biomedical equipment to other hospital centers outside the town.

The biomedical supplies that will be supplied to the E.S.E. San Carlos de Cañasgordas Hospital through this project are: 1 portable ultrasound Z60; 1 David T1 2000 transport incubator; 2 fetal monitors; 6 echotones and 3 adult/paediatric vital signs monitors

WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM THIS PROJECT?

This project can benefit 17,000 users of the E.S.E. Hospital San Carlos, with an emphasis on the pregnant and neonatal population of the municipality.

SUSTAINABILITY: (explain how the project will continue to operate once the financial support you receive for this project ends)

The E.S.E. Hospital San Carlos has preventive and corrective maintenance contracts for biomedical equipment, as well as a contract for metrology and calibration of the equipment.

Additionally, it has trained and certified medical and paramedical personnel to care for users with health requirements.

IS THE COMMUNITY INVOLVED? DESCRIBE THE ROLE OF THE LOCAL COMMUNITY IN PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION AND CONTINUITY.

The E.S.E. Hospital San Carlos has spaces for social participation in health such as: Ethics Committee, User Association, as well as programming and monitoring of plans for social participation in health. In these spaces, monitoring and control will be carried out to ensure the best use of biomedical equipment.
