Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Colombia

Location: Villavicencio

Total Budget: $31,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT:

Establish an educational and recreational support center for school-age children in the El Morichal neighborhood community. Improve the facilities of the classrooms at the El Morichal community center and the sanitary facilities in this building. Provide furniture for a reading and recreational room for school-age children.

Develop academic tutoring activities, reading promotion, and cultural activities three times a week in this space EL RINCON DEL SABER, in agreement with various entities such as the House of Culture of the municipality of Villavicencio, Fundetec, an institution dedicated to education and with the collaboration of the Educational Institutions of the sector of commune 4 of the city, namely, the Jorge Eliecer Gaitán Ayala Departmental School Educational Institution, the Marco Antonio Franco Educational Institution, and the Atanasio Girardot Educational Institution.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT: Our project seeks to provide a recreational and academic space so that school-aged children in the El Morichal neighborhood can develop activities that allow them to encourage their interest in reading from an early age, thus promoting the development of communication skills, strengthening their imagination and allowing them to make profitable use of their free time, during hours outside of their school day. The first step of this project is to make improvements and maintenance of the facilities of the Community Center classrooms so that they are adequate for the safety and hygiene necessary to carry out activities with the child population. For this purpose, resources obtained with the subsidy will be used and a labor contract will be made with people who are experts in this trade, preferably residents of the community.

The second step of the plan is to equip a classroom at the El Morichal Community Center, which includes a library for children ages 5-14, an academic and recreational workspace, educational games, and a computer for online tools and a printer for printed resources. The third step is to initiate activities through agreements established with the House of Culture and the schools in the area and through an alliance with FUNDETEC, which is a technical training institution that has the experience and trained personnel to carry out training, academic reinforcement activities, and reading promotion activities, three times a week for 3 hours a day for the duration of the project, but with a commitment to continue with this programming in subsequent years.

PLEASE DESCRIBE WHAT NEEDS YOU IDENTIFIED? HOW WILL THE PROJECT ADDRESS THESE NEEDS? WHO WILL BENEFICIARY OF THIS PROJECT? MENTION AN ESTIMATED NUMBER OF BENEFICIARIES.

The El Morichal neighborhood is located in the city of Villavicencio in commune 4. The community is made up of displaced, migrant and working families. It belongs to stratum 1. It is a vulnerable community that requires the support of our organization to promote the protection of children from a potentially harmful and dangerous environment, due to factors such as drug addiction and crime.

By conducting surveys at a community meeting, the needs that the community identified as priorities were identified, these being: support in the good use of free time for children and youth, the possibility of school reinforcement for school-age children. The project will address these needs by creating a space, THE CORNER OF KNOWLEDGE, to develop academic and recreational activities that allow the school-age population to make good use of their free time and thus ensure that, as a result of this use of their free time, they can be partially protected from exposure to the environment of drug addiction and crime present in the neighborhood.

The beneficiaries will be children from the community of Barrio el Morichal in the city of Villavicencio who are in basic primary schooling, a total of 30 to 40 children from the community. The direct beneficiaries will be the children of the community, approximately between 30 and 40 children, an estimate based on the current attendance of children to the activities that the Villavicencio Rotary Club has been carrying out weekly at the Community Center, and the indirect beneficiaries will be the parents and grandparents of these children, who will have the assurance that their children are protected during the time in activities that are beneficial for their development.

SUSTAINABILITY: (explain how the project will continue to operate once the financial support you receive for this project ends)

The EL RINCON DEL SABER project will be carried out in partnership with the FUNDETEC foundation, who have extensive experience in the development of educational activities and have a training program for Educational Assistants, and with the Casa de la Cultura de Villavicencio, who have been providing us with their support by sending workshop facilitators for cultural activities at the Community Center.

The possibility is also being raised that the schools in commune 4 (Jorge Eliecer Gaitán Ayala Educational Institution, Atanasio Girardot Educational Institution, and Marco Antonio Franco Educational Institution) could be our allies in this project by sending 10th and 11th grade students to act as assistants in the activities and carry out hours of literacy activities through their involvement in this program.

IS THE COMMUNITY INVOLVED? DESCRIBE THE ROLE OF THE LOCAL COMMUNITY IN THE IMPLEMENTATION AND CONTINUITY OF THE PROJECT. If the community is involved, people have been informed at community meetings, work is being done hand in hand with the community action board and other community leaders, people from the neighborhood will be involved in the purchase of supplies and contracts for work carried out to make improvements to the facilities, and young people from the area's schools are being involved so that they can carry out literacy hours by participating in this project. PROJECT FINANCING Thanks to your support, our club will help the community by solving its most important needs.
