Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Kenya

Location: Nairobi

Total Budget: $112,000

Areas of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene, Basic education and literacy

Improving education facilities at Kiptulwo primary school (Rift Valley Kenya)

School built ofcorrugated iron which is now rusty and leaking.

Poor classrooms mean chilly and humid conditions resulting in an Absenteeism rate of about 40%

Jigger infestations due to exposure to earth flooring and only one pit latrine for 624 students create additional problems

This difficult learning environment inhibits passing national exams, limiting chances of joining national secondary schools and eventually university education

DESIRED OUTCOMES

1. Make schooling fun/enjoyable for children as it is in other communities. Children should look forward to school and seek excuses to stay at home

2. Motivation to stay in school, hence improved overall performance & access to higher education.

3. Improved teacher facilities ie staff room, tables, etc.

4. Quality health for the young bodies and minds; reduced jigger infestations and health complications from the local chilly weather.

Since 2021 limited progress has been made resulting in improved classroom structures saving generations of children by giving them a fair chance at education and life

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
