Start Date: July 1, 2025
End Date: September 1, 2025
The Rotary Club of Kingston will undertake a major community development initiative aimed at improving the learning environment for children with disabilities, particularly those who are blind, at the Salvation Army School for the Blind in Jamaica. This project is informed by a comprehensive needs assessment conducted by the Early Childhood Commission (ECC), which identified several critical gaps preventing the school from obtaining early childhood accreditation.
Identified Needs and Project Scope:
The ECC's assessment highlighted the necessity of classroom renovation to align with national standards for early childhood education. The proposed intervention will address the following areas:
a) Painting and General Refurbishing: Rotary club members will engage in hands-on work to paint the classroom, promoting a welcoming and stimulating environment.
b) Tiling and Bathroom Renovation:Safe and hygienic restroom facilities are essential for young children, especially those with visual impairments. Renovations will include new tiles, fixtures, and accessibility modifications.
c) Provision of Furniture:Child-sized, durable, and accessible classroom furniture will be provided to support an inclusive and comfortable learning space.
d) Installation of a Smart Board: Incorporating technology such as a smart board will enhance the multisensory learning experience and provide inclusive educational opportunities.
e) Learning Resources: The project will provide age-appropriate educational materials, including braille books and tactile learning aids, catering to the needs of students with visual impairments.
Community Involvement:
Rotary Club of Kingston members will actively participate in painting and supporting the project's implementation, promoting Rotary's commitment to service above self. In collaboration with school administrators, teachers, and parents, the project will ensure alignment with the specific needs of the children served.
By addressing the infrastructural and educational resource needs identified by the Early Childhood Commission, this project exemplifies Rotary's commitment to equity in education and social inclusion. The Rotary Club of Kingston is proud to lead this transformative initiative that will uplift some of the most vulnerable members of our society and create lasting impact.
