BACKGROUND
This project is to be implemented in Kisumu County, on the shores of Lake Victoria in the western part of Kenya. The location is on the rice fields and prone to perennial flooding from spill-over waters of the lake and nearby rivers. Access to adequate portable water is a problem, given the distances to water sources and lack of treatment. Malaria and other waterborne diseases are thus a common feature in the area and affect the general health of this community, affecting mostly children and women. This project intends to address the health issues starting with menstrual health as the starting point.
OBJECTIVES
The objective is to establish an integrated Menstrual Health management project in Nyangoto mixed secondary school to initially benefit both the school and the surrounding community of 500 and 300 persons, respectively. Specifically, this will involve putting up both water supply and sanitation infrastructure coupled with the necessary training and other capacity-building initiatives. The expected outcome is a more informed community on matters of personal hygiene and best practices when it comes to overall menstrual health management.
IMPLEMENTATION
The implementation will be a collaborative effort between Rotary Eclub Safari, TAMUWA, a Sustainable energy organisation and Kenya Network of Grassroot Women (KNGW0, both of which are partners on the ground
FUNDING
The project is estimated to cost USD 52,546.00. D1730 has pledged 20427 and another USD 14698 cash contribution from some French clubs in D1730. After incorporating World fund matching, the funding deficit is being sought from other sources. We have put in a request to D9212 for additional funding towards the deficit.
SUSTAINABILITY
Our partners on the ground, TAMUWA and KNGW are currently engaged in community empowerment initiatives. These include economic empowerment and sustainable development initiatives, including setting up community-led cottage industries through a Community development group. They will engage in skills such as soap making and washable sanitary pants for women. This will be part of a wider engagement with the community and ensure sustainability. Eclub safari will set up a Rotary community corps in the area to play an oversight role as well do M&E activities. With enhanced information through education, affordable kits/material, and continuous M&E, sustainability will be ensured
