The community of Maai Mahiu, situated in Kenya's Great Rift Valley, faces severe water scarcity and poor groundwater quality due to high salinity and mineral contamination from geothermal activity. This ongoing crisis has led to food insecurity, adverse health outcomes, and limited economic opportunities for its 12,000 residents.
In a collaborative effort, local leaders identified a sustainable solution-a reliable, clean water source in the nearby highlands. The critical next step is the construction of a pipeline system to deliver this vital resource to the community.
This Rotary Global Grant project addresses these challenges by funding the development of a water delivery infrastructure, ensuring consistent access to safe, clean water. Rooted in community-driven leadership, the initiative emphasizes local ownership, capacity building, and long-term sustainability.
By securing reliable water access, the project will:
• Improve public health by eliminating reliance on contaminated sources.
• Reduce dependency on external food aid through enhanced agricultural productivity.
• Stimulate economic growth by enabling new opportunities tied to water security.
Aligned with Rotary's Area of Focus: Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), this initiative fosters community resilience, promotes better health outcomes, and supports economic stability. Through strategic partnerships and financial support, the project aspires to become a model for sustainable development, positively impacting thousands of lives while upholding principles of environmental stewardship and long-term viability.
