The project entails construction of Washrooms in 3 Schools, Perimeter walls in 2 Schools and sinking & solarization of a bolehole in one School. The needs were identified while carrying out other Rotary activities.
JUSTIFICATION
The ratio of pupils to toilets in Kenyan primary schools is estimated at 1:200 for girls and 1:230 for boys while the World Health Organization recommends a pupil- toilet ratio of 1:35 for boys and 1:25 for girls. The situation in some of the target schools is worse with one not having any usable toilet for the boys, the one block which was being used having been declared unsafe for use.
The four schools had a population of 5,504 students by the time of the needs assessment with the number likely to have increased. The population for the primary schools was 4265 students and 102 teachers while the total number of toilets available was 54 a majority of them being in horrible state. The student population also includes special unit students who have to walk some distance to share toilets with abled students. In some schools the pre-unit students also share toilets with other students against what is recommended.
The projects will address the issues of hygiene, prevent theft of school properties and reduce conflict brought about by the schools being exposed due to lack of perimeter walls considering their locations.
The timeline is expected to be about 6 Months. Rotary club of Thika members will undertake the implementation, Monitoring and Evalution of the project and also carry out sensitization on hygiene health.
