The main objective of this project is to provide safe drinking water, sanitation, hygiene and health facilities to 130 families of Mithukaram village through the lead host club, Rotary Club of Chitwan. All 130 families are primarily dependent on temporary dangling piped water supplied through a gravity water supply system built some 28 years ago with the technical and financial support of FINNIDA. The water from the system is available only for maximum of 30 minutes in the morning and during the dry season, people use spring spouts located at distances of one and half hours walk. The major problems in the existing water supply system are landslides and turbidity during the rainy season and the transmission pipelines are cut at several locations. A 40,000 liters masonry tank was built some 7 years back by the rural municipality, which is never filled by the existing water source.
The proposed solutions to address the demand of the Mithukaram community are (i) supplying treated drinking water to all households through private yard connections, the water will be lifted by solar hybrid pumping system from the 20,000 liters capacity sump well to the uphill 40,000 liters storage tank at a dynamic head of 250 meters (ii) hygiene and sanitation campaigning for sustainable hygiene behavior change and (iii) vegetables farming by using tap water through micro-irrigation system. The expected outputs of this project will be in two folds; (1) health benefits from WASH program intervention and (2) economic development by commercial vegetable farming through micro-irrigation system.
If the international sponsoring club is identified and agreed to support, we expect to commence this project from January 2026 and complete in 12 months.
