Humanitarian Projects - Project Planning Describe the community needs that your project will address. Drinking contaminated water contributes to hospital cases and death in Zambia. There is currently a cholera outbreak in Zambia affecting over 10,000 people. Most families draw water from shallow wells or communal taps which are not safe. The Ministry of Health declared that Lusaka underground water is contaminated and therefore unsafe to drink and mandated chlorination or boiling. Over 60% of households have chronic diarrheal diseases. Underprivileged Zambians living with HIV/AIDS under the have compromised immune systems and are therefore more likely to contract diseases that may lead to death after drinking untreated water. How did your project team identify these needs. Our project partner, The Power of Love Foundation, operates the Matero Care Center in Lusaka, Zambia. They provide food, medicines, school support, and a package of health care services. They report that waterborne disease directly impacts their patients health. This information is supported by the Zambia Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization. Both organizations have issued press statements regarding cholera outbreaks. They report over 10,000 cases have been reported and the "outbreak continues to pose a threat to the health security of the nation." How were members of the benefiting community involved in finding solutions. Community leaders, HIV+ Carers and health Professionals met with families and people under the Matero Care Centre Programme in identifying their needs and clean, safe water was given as a huge priority area. Sustainable water filtration was selected over alternative solutions such as boiling (energy consumption and smoke hazards) and chlorination (costly and contributes to other health issues). How were community members involved in planning the project. In 2023, Point Loma Rotary and Nkwazi Rotary had a pilot water filtration project benefiting 60 families. Community Health Care workers at the Matero Care Center developed the deployment and training plan. The families participated in the project planning and implementation. They evaluated two different filtration systems and provided feedback. Their assessment and recommendations summarized in the attached "July 2023 - SWFS Evaluation Report" contributed to the plan for this Global Grant project. Humanitarian Projects - Project Implementation Summarize each step of your project's implementation.
Will you work in coordination with any related initiative in the community? If yes, briefly describe the other initiatives and how they relate to this project. If no, please explain. Are local initiatives not addressing these needs? Or, if they are, why did you decide not to work with them? Yes. Matero Care Centre have people under their programme whom they periodically visit. In discussing other issues, continued provision of clean and safe water is extremely important to the wellbeing of their people. They will incorporate Safe Water Filtration System training and assessment into their existing program. Please describe the training, community outreach, or educational programs this project will include. Health care professionals, community leaders and people under the Matero Care Centre Programme will be given training on how to use and maintain the water filtration systems. Each water filtration system will have a waterproof sticker giving instructions on how to use and periodically clean the water filter. Trained Community Health Workers will inspect the Water Filtration systems during their periodic visits to beneficiaries. How were these needs identified? The increase in mortality and incidence of diarrheal and other water borne diseases amongst people living with HIV/AiDS led to the identification of these needs. The need for SWFS has become even more urgent as currently, there is a severe cholera outbreak in Zambia. Health professionals, Carers, Community Health Workers and the Government all declared that safe clean water in the townships is a crisis need. What incentives (for example, monetary compensation, awards, certification, or publicity), will you use, if any, to encourage community members to participate in the project? An official handover ceremony will be held to kick start the distribution of the water filtration systems. Families and Health Care Workers will be invited to the Function where drama groups will perform. Rotary banners and materials will be on display. The press will be invited to provide coverage List any community members or community groups that will oversee the continuation of the project after grant-funded activities conclude. The Health Care Workers employed by the Matero Care Center will continue to oversee the use of the Safe Water Filtration Systems as part of their regular visits to families. Budget Will you purchase budget items from local vendors? Explain the process you used to select vendors. Yes. The filtration system stands will be contracted from a local vendor as well as all the printing, transportation and assembly. The filtration hardware will be purchased in bulk from a source in Kenya. 1. The best and most affordable vendor from 3 or more quotations is selected to provide services 2. In some cases, vendors with a prior history of good service are selected to maintain consistency in the quality of services, such as workmanship or consistent colours Did you use competitive bidding to select vendors? If no, please explain. Yes Please provide an operating and maintenance plan for the equipment or materials you purchased for this project. This plan should include who will operate and maintain the equipment and how they will be trained. Before handing over the water filtration system, people under the Matero Care Centre programme together with their family members and Community Health Workers will be trained in using the system. Emphasis is given on how to periodically flush the filter. Describe how community members will maintain the equipment after grant-funded activities conclude. Will replacement parts be available? The water filtration system has a life span of 10 years. As mentioned above, training is given on how to maintain the system. If the grant will be used to purchase any equipment, will the equipment be culturally appropriate and conform to the community's technology standards? If yes, please explain. If no, describe how the project team will help community members adopt the technology. Yes. The simple water filtration system does not have any potentially offensive characteristics to any cultural, racial or religious groups. Similar systems are in use throughout Zambia. After the project is completed, who will own the items purchased by grant funds? No items may be owned by a Rotary district, club, or member. Recipient families of the SWFS will own and benefit from the Equipment Funding Have you found a local funding source to sustain project outcomes for the long term? If yes, please describe this funding source. The Matero Care Center Healthcare Workers are funded by The Power of Love Foundation. They will provide ongoing training and support to the recipient families. No addiitonal funds are required for the hardware. Will any part of the project generate income for ongoing project funding? If yes, please explain. No Is your economic and community development activity a microcredit project? If yes, upload your microcredit supplement file. No |
