Strengthening Eye care

Every 5 seconds one person in our world goes blind and a child goes blind every minute. 75% of all blindness, around the world could be easily avoided. 90% of children who are blind don't go to school.

To provide high quality eye care & free cataract surgery with IOL to the rural poor of Kanchipuram & Tiruvallur districts of Tamilnadu and Chittoor District of Andhra Pradesh, the Rotary Club of Madras Fort started in 1994 the project “Kannoli-Vision Saver” at Sankara Eye Hospital, Pammal, Chennai. Through this project 1,48,435 cataract surgeries with IOL has been done to the rural poor FREE of cost.

India with 40.9 million people with diabetes has already become the 'Diabetes Capital of the World' and this number is set to increase to 69.9 million by 2025. In the past five years, 1596 patients from the hospital’s outpatient clinic have been examined to have diabetic retinopathy and advised Fundus Angiography. Non diabetic retinal conditions needing Funds Angiography have been 1417. This project is to diagnose the diabetic retinopathy amongst the diabetic patients. For this purpose, one Fundus Fluorescence Angiography, the diagnistic equipment is needed. This project can be got done in a maximum period of 3 / 4 months.
