Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Corinth, TX

Total Budget: $14,016

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: Provide a dictionary to every public school third grade student in the Denton, Lake Dallas, Sanger and Krum independent school districts.

There are four school districts who will be included in this project, totaling over 30 elementary schools. Each school's third graders will receive a dictionary by Christmas break for their skill learning which usually occurs in the second semester of the school year. Teachers look forward to the distribution day and the students upon receiving their books are excited to have a book to call their own.

1) ISD's need dictionaries for each of their third grade students by the start of the January semester. Over 3000 dictionaries will be provided.

(2) Denton-Lake Cities Rotary Club will contact each school to get exact numbers of students and will coordinate with each school principal. The time frame to meet with students will occur between October and December. If any schools are missed or delayed, those schools will be taken care of in early January. The project is scheduled to be completed by February 15, 2025 with the final report scheduled to be submitted by March 31, 2025.

(3) Funds will be applied toward the purchase of dictionaries and labels to go in each dictionary. Each label includes the Rotary wheel as well as the four-way test and a place for each student to print their name.

(4) This is an "all club" project that requires over 90% participation in preparing, presentation and distribution of books to students in order to be successful. It also includes a local Denton non-profit who temporarily stores the dictionaries and assists in inserting labels. A sign-up sheet is circulated at Club meetings and each member is requested to sign up for at least one school distribution. Team members are responsible for contacting their assigned school and coordinating with the school principal for a presentation date and time. Presentations are generally attended by two to three members. Presentations usually take a half hour or so to talk to the students about the dictionaries, including using the four-way test as an example of how to look up words. Ideally, all of a school's third grade students will meet in a common area of the school, such as a cafeteria, at the same time for the presentation and all receive their dictionaries at once.
