IMPROVING SANITATION AND HYGIENE IN BUGIRI MUNICIPALITY,UGANDA
PROJECT TITLE: Toilets for Life (T4Life): Enhancing Sanitation and Public Health in Bugiri Municipality
PRIMARY GOAL:
To improve sanitation, hygiene, and access to safe water in Bugiri Municipality by constructing septic toilets, emptying pit latrines, and providing hygiene education to the community.
PROJECT OBJECTIVE:
Improve access to safe sanitation facilities in schools, Health centers, and public places like markets, parks, truck parks, through the construction of septic toilets.
Reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid by improving hygiene practices and sanitation infrastructure.
Provide safe water access by implementing connection to tap water at all new constructed septic toilets in schools, health centers and public places.
Educate the community on hygiene and sanitation best practices to sustain the benefits of improved infrastructure.
Create job opportunities through the training of sanitation workers and technical staff to maintain and manage the newly established sanitation systems.
Key Identified Problems:
Lack of a sewage system in Bugiri Municipality.
Only three public pit latrines for a population of 45,650, one in the market of which is nearly full and broken down.
76% of the population lack access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities.
High prevalence of waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid due to poor sanitation due to the construction and use of pit latrine that contaminates underground waters. The digging of pit latrines in the process the water table is penetrated and mixed with the near by water used for drinking and cooking and people end up getting sick.
Inadequate sanitation facilities in public places like markets, bus parks, and schools.
Overcrowded schools with inadequate toilets, contributing to high dropout rates, especially among girls.
No garbage management system, leading to contamination of water sources by human waste.
TARGET BENEFICIARIES/DIRECT BENEFICIARIES:
Approximately 45,650 residents of Bugiri Municipality, including: Students in overcrowded schools, Traders and customers in markets, Truck drivers and passengers in taxi parks and truck parks, Patients and healthcare workers in health centers Women/men, girls, and children.
INDIRECT BENEFICIARIES:
Communities surrounding Bugiri Municipality who will benefit from improved sanitation and reduced disease transmission.
PROPOSED INTERVENTIONS:
Construction of Septic Toilets:
Build septic toilets in critical areas: schools, hospitals/health centers, public places/markets, and transportation hubs (Taxi/bus and truck parks). Will focus on public spaces with high traffic to ensure equitable access to sanitation.
EMPTYING OF FILLED PIT LATRINES:
Provide services to empty filled pit latrines in schools, hospitals, markets, churches/mosques, and other public places to prevent overflow and contamination.
SAFE WATER INFRASTURE DEVELOPMENT:
Develop boreholes, and connection to water systems to provide clean drinking water to the Septic toilets sites.
TRAINING AND CAPACITY BUILDING:
Train local sanitation workers to maintain toilets, manage sanitation systems, and educate the community on hygiene practices.
Establish a team of trainers to ensure sustainable knowledge transfer within the community.
Hygiene Education Campaigns:
Conduct community-wide hygiene education campaigns to raise awareness of handwashing, safe water practices, and the importance of sanitation.
WASTE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM DEVELOPMET:
Establish a garbage management system and buy one garbage truck to collect garbage and reduce open garbage dumping, prevent the contamination of water sources.
EXPECTED OUTCOMES:
Increased access to improved sanitation for at least 40% of Bugiri Municipality's population.
Reduced incidence of waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid by 50% within the first year of project completion.
Improved retention rates of girls in schools by 20%, due to access to gender-friendly sanitation facilities.
Strengthened community capacity to manage sanitation infrastructure and hygiene practices.
Improved public health and productivity, particularly for women, girls, and children.

The community needs assessment: Conducted to initiate the project rotary members were involved, including the community beneficiaries, community leaders and they will continue to assess and track the progress of the project, truck sanitation, water access, and public health indicators. Ongoing Monitoring: Monthly progress reports on infrastructure development and community training.
There will be and impact Evaluation: Annual evaluation to assess the project's impact on reducing disease, improving sanitation access, and enhancing community hygiene, which will be submitted as a final report as required by the Rotary Foundation.
The project funds will be used to construct 5 septic toilets, connect water to all the five toilet sites, buy 2 aquonic tanks and aquonic waste treatment materials, by 1 cesspool truck and 1 garbage truck
